About Derek

Derek is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at McGill University. He cares about impactful adoption of computing technology – particularly data science and AI. This has led him to focus on research, consulting, and humanitarian projects that prioritize solving real-world problems over the fanciness of algorithms, the power of AIs, and the elegance of the dataset. His research has appeared in top-tier journals including Science and PNAS. He's worked with a diverse array of organizations including the United Nations, the Government of Canada, and most of the major social media platforms, as well as a host of industry partners and clients. In addition, he's the President of Charitable Analytics International where he brings the benefits of AI to humanitarian and development work around the world.
